Buy what you can’t stop looking at.
Not what matches the sofa. Not what someone told you was a good investment. Not what you think you should like.
A collector I know bought a large, orange painting with enormous, unruly breasts. Her mother-in-law tries very hard not to show that she hates it. She and her husband love it. Every single day.
That’s the point.
You don’t need a reason to like what you like. But buy for the long relationship — not the moment. You’ll live with this work on bad mornings and good ones.
The question is never “is this important?” The question is: does it still hold you when you’ve seen it a hundred times?
If yes, that’s your answer.
